After the start of Atal Tunnel Rohtang, the gates of tourism opened here. Instead of agriculture, Lahuli is now giving more priority to tourism.

In many areas, including Koksar, Sarchu, Sissu, Gemur, and Jispa, tents are more visible in the fields than potatoes and cabbage.

Potato has been sown in 900 hectares of land.

This time the sowing of potatoes in Lahaul has decreased. According to the Agriculture Department, the potato was cultivated in 958 hectares of land in the Lahaul-Spiti district.

This time potato is sown in about 900 hectares of land. Contract farming of potatoes is done here. The well-known companies of the country making chips provide potato seeds to the farmers here.

Companies also buy potatoes when the crop is ready. In the cold desert, there is only one crop a year.

The cultivation of potato, cabbage, broccoli, iceberg in one bigha of land usually gives farmers a maximum annual income of up to one lakh rupees.

After taking out the cost of seeds, fertilizers, and laborers, a total of Rs 60,000 to 70,000 comes into the pocket of the farmers.

With the increase in tourism, Lahulis have set up tented camping sites around the houses and in the fields. 15 to 20 tents have been set up in one bigha of land.

The cost of raising a tent and facilities in it has come to about one lakh rupees. There is a double bed inside the tent. There is proper arrangement of bathroom and toilet.

The fare for a night is between 3000 to 5000 rupees. Two people can stay in a double bed. Dinner and breakfast are being provided in this package.

The tourist season will continue in Lahaul till the first week of October.

Himachal Pradesh Technical Education Minister Dr. Ramlal Markandeya says that after Atal Rohtang Tunnel, there is a new dawn in Lahaul.

432 homestays have been registered in a year. People have started building hotels. The tents in the camping site are attracting tourists. 11 towers have been installed to boost the mobile network.

What do Delhi tourists say?

Ashish Kumar, a tourist from Delhi, says that spending the night in the tents in the charming valleys of Lahaul has its own pleasure.

With the convenience of home in a tent, it does not feel that we are away from home.

Ex-Serviceman and Director Shrimani River Camp Site Gemur (Lahaul) Namgyal Dorje says that tourists are enjoying spending the night in tents on the banks of the river or in the fields.
