Due to the ongoing border dispute between Assam and Mizoram, the National Highway 306 was stopped for the sixth day on Monday.
Meanwhile, a person from Assam crossed the border into Mizoram on Sunday evening and was arrested there. He later died in hospital under suspicious circumstances.
This led to further escalation of tension between the two states of the North-East. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah informing about the situation.
SP Vanlalfaka Ralte of Kolasib district bordering Mizoram said drug trafficker Intajul Laskar was stopped while coming from Assam and was later arrested.
He died in hospital a few hours later due to health reasons. At the same time, Assam Police has said that Intajul went to pick up wood in the forest, he was caught from there.
The report of his disappearance is recorded at the Dholai police station in Assam.
He was revealed to be in the custody of the Kolasib police on Monday morning. Hours later it is revealed that he has died. Assam officials have termed it a case of death in custody.
Meanwhile, 11 oil tankers going to Mizoram and six trucks loaded with LPG cylinders are stopped in Silchar, Assam. They have been stranded there for several days due to the highway being stopped.
The dispute between the two states began on October 17 when some anti-social elements broke down 18 huts and three other smaller buildings on the border. After this, the national highway was stopped due to the tension created.
