12.8 percent of Kerala’s population suffering from mental problems, health minister expressed concern.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Sunday said that around 12.8 percent of the total population of Kerala have mental health issues for which they require scientific treatment.
She told that out of this only 15 percent of people want scientific treatment.
Giving statistics on World Mental Health Day, the Health Minister said that people are not reaching treatment centers and medical facilities as they are unaware of such facilities.
In this context, it is necessary to intensify the activities related to mental health literacy in society, he said.
The Health Department is actively running this mission with the cooperation of all.
Underlining the need for mental health guidance in the post-Corona pandemic world, he said that the physical and mental health of the people is essential for the survival and progress of any society.
The Minister said this while inaugurating an online seminar organized by the Department of Psychiatry, Medical College, Indian Psychiatric Society, Kerala, and KSSP on World Mental Health Day.
12.8 percent of Kerala’s population suffering from mental problems: George said, ‘Along with the health of the body, the health of the mind is also very important.
Everyone needs to focus on identifying diseases and pain and seeking timely treatment.
But it is a fact that most people are not able to diagnose mental health problems, symptoms, and conditions and seek scientific treatment.
It is important to note that most people do not have an accurate understanding of mental health.
Pointing to the need to create more awareness about mental health post-COVID-19, he said that post-Corona pandemic people are under stress due to various factors, be it financial or otherwise.
Moreover, everything including studies is shifting to online mediums. The mental health of children should also be given priority.
There are misconceptions in society about mental health which need to be changed through proper awareness campaigns.
World Mental Health Day is observed globally on 10 October to raise awareness on mental health issues and mobilize efforts to support mental health.
