Historic Shift: Women Set to Join Territorial Army
Historic Shift: Women may soon join the Territorial Army for the first time as the Indian Army plans a pilot project. A historic step toward expanding roles for women in defence.
In a groundbreaking step toward gender equality in India’s defence sector, women may soon be inducted into the Territorial Army for the first time. This historic initiative marks a major stride in expanding women’s roles in national security and reflects the government’s push to strengthen women’s empowerment in the armed forces.

According to official sources, the Indian Army is considering the inclusion of women cadres in select Territorial Army battalions as part of a pilot project. If approved, this would be the first time women will wear the Territorial Army uniform and serve alongside male personnel in this unique volunteer-based defence force.
Sources confirmed on Sunday that the induction of women will initially be restricted to a few battalions, allowing the Army to assess operational requirements, training needs, and overall feedback. Based on the success of this initial phase, the number of battalions open for women may be expanded in the future.
The government has repeatedly highlighted the importance of increasing the participation of women in the armed forces. During a Rajya Sabha session in March 2022, then Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt stated that the commissioning of women in the armed forces is a continuously evolving process, reviewed regularly to open new pathways for women soldiers and officers.
At present, women serve in 10 branches and services of the Indian Army, excluding the Armed Forces Medical Services. These include:
The proposed inclusion of women in the Territorial Army is expected to further expand these opportunities and boost women’s representation in defence roles.
The Territorial Army (TA) is a unique military organization based on the principle of “citizen soldiers.” It allows able-bodied Indian volunteers—especially those who exceed the age limit for regular Army enlistment—to serve the nation in uniform while continuing their civilian professions.
The TA plays a crucial role in supporting the regular Army during emergencies, natural disasters, and national security challenges.
The Territorial Army, in its modern form, was established on August 18, 1948, through the Territorial Army Act. It was later formally inaugurated on October 9, 1949, by India’s first Governor-General, C. Rajagopalachari. Since then, it has remained a vital pillar of India’s defence readiness.

The proposed move to induct women into the Territorial Army is widely being hailed as a transformative step toward gender-inclusive defence reforms. It aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting women’s empowerment, expanding military opportunities, and recognizing women’s contributions to the nation’s security.
If successfully implemented, the initiative could inspire thousands of women across India to explore military service, thereby strengthening the spirit of patriotism and diversity within the armed forces.
