What is Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) in Motorcycles? Working, Benefits & Safety Features

Learn what an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) is, how it works in motorcycles, and why it’s essential for safety. Discover the benefits of ABS in preventing skidding and improving bike control during sudden braking. Almost all the motorcycles coming in recent times have become very advanced. Features have started coming in them, which have improved the riding experience of the rider as well as increased safety. This includes Anti Lock Braking System, i.e. ABS, which is very important for every type of bike. Given this, we are telling you here what ABS is and how it works in a motorcycle.

What is Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)?

When you ride a bike and use the brake during this time, the ABS prevents the vehicle from slipping. The motorcycle, which has this feature, then no matter how fast the bike is and even if sudden braking has to be applied, it does not slip. This feature prevents the wheel from locking when the brake is applied and the driver remains in control of the bike handle. During this, the bike changes direction or stops without slipping and becoming unbalanced.

How does ABS work?

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) consists of three parts, which are the ECU kit, the brake, and the wheel speed sensor. All three are installed in the rear wheel. The speed sensor monitors the lock up of the wheel and is connected to the electronic control unit. This electronic control unit allows the wheel to roll for a certain distance when sudden braking is applied and applies the brake at a certain interval. Due to this, the risk of the bike skidding is greatly reduced. Along with this, a warning light also lights up on the bike’s screen, which shows whether the ABS is working properly or not.

  2. Due to this, the bike does not skid even when braking at high speed.
  3. It helps in controlling the bike’s handle when braking is applied in an emergency.
  4. Due to this, the wheels of the vehicle do not lock and the vehicle can be controlled.
  5. Due to this, the chances of the bike’s tyres getting worn out are less.
  6. This helps the bike to stop in a straight line.
  7. This helps the motorcycle to reduce speed in a controlled manner.
