Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will not go to Sri Lanka in July. Team India will play T20 Internationals and ODIs in Sri Lanka.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly, said on Sunday that the Indian team would visit Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series in July without the top players.
Big players like captain Virat Kohli, limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma will not be part of the tour, as they will be preparing for the five-match Test series against England at that time.
Ganguly said, “We have planned a limited-overs series for the senior men’s team in July, where they will play T20 Internationals and ODIs in Sri Lanka.”
When asked about two different teams of India, this former captain said that the team participating in the limited-overs series will be different from the team that toured England.
He said, ‘It will be a team of white ball (limited-overs) specialists. It will be different from the team that toured England. He made it clear that the Cricket Board has also kept in mind the limited-overs regulars.
Sri Lanka can have a series of at least five T20 and three ODIs on tour. The Indian team’s England tour will end on September 14 and the remaining matches of the IPL are yet to be planned.
In such a situation, BCCI wants players like Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Yuzvendra Singh Chahal to be ready for the matches.
A BCCI source explained the reasoning for the tour, saying, ‘The BCCI president wants all our top players to be ready for the match and since there is no limited-overs series on England tour, the month of July is well used. May go.’
He said that in July it would not be possible for the top players of the Indian team to come from England as the quarantine rules are very strict there.
The source said, “Technically, the senior team does not have to play any official match in July. The Test team will practice by playing matches among themselves.
In such a situation, there is no harm in giving a chance to match practice for the limited-overs experts of India. This will also give the selectors a chance to fill the shortcomings of the team.
This will also give the team an opportunity to experiment, such as Rahul Chahar or Rahul Tewatia can be tested as an alternative to Chahal for leg-spin.
Chetan Sakaria can be tried as the left-arm fast bowler. It will also have to be seen whether players like Devadatta Padikkal and Shreyas Iyer are fit to play the match.
Prithvi Shaw’s ODI career did not pan out, while batsmen like Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan are desperate to strengthen their claim in the team.
