Violence Erupts in Manipur’s Jiribam District: Militants Burn Houses, Community Demands Weapons Return.

Violence Erupts in Manipur’s Jiribam District: Violence has erupted in Manipur’s Jiribam district as militants allegedly killed a local and burned houses, displacing over 200 Meitei community members.

The affected community demands the return of licensed weapons from the police.

Violence Erupts in Manipur’s Jiribam District: In the Jiribam district of Manipur, militants allegedly killed a person.

Due to which violence broke out there, more than 200 people of the Meitei community have been evacuated from their villages and taken to a newly built relief camp.

Officials gave this information on Saturday.

Suspected militants burnt the houses of people living in a relief camp at the Jiri Sports Complex in the outlying villages of Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra of Jiribam district.

Displaced people living 30 km away from the city.

Officials said that most of the newly displaced people are living in villages more than 30 km away from Jiribam town. He said that more security personnel have been sent to the area.

Manipur Police has ordered the state police commando personnel stationed in Imphal Valley to go to Jiribam for duty on Saturday with immediate effect.

Soibam Saratkumar went missing from the field.

Police said tension prevailed in the ethnic conflict-hit Jiribam district of Manipur on Thursday evening when militants of another community allegedly killed a 59-year-old man of one community.

The man, named Soibam Saratkumar Singh, went missing after going to his field in the morning. A police officer said his body was later found, bearing marks of wounds from a sharp object.

He said that after the incident, angry locals set fire to an empty structure in retaliation.

People demonstrated for the return of weapons.

Local people also protested in front of the Jiribam police station. They demanded that the licensed weapons taken from them because of the elections be returned to them after the elections.

Since May of last year, Jiribam, which is home to a varied mix of Meitei, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and non-Manipuri people, has not been impacted by the ethnic strife that has been raging in Manipur.

The ethnic conflict between the Imphal valley-based Meitei and the hill region-based Kuki people has left over 200 people dead and thousands homeless.
