UN Security Council: India Will Be Strong Contender Of UNSC

UN Security Council: UN reacted to the released World Population Report, and said- India will be a strong contender for permanent membership of the UNSC in 2023.

A top UN official has said that India’s claim for permanent membership in the UN Security Council will be further strengthened if it overtakes China to become the world’s most populous country by next year.

The World Population Prospectus 2022 report released on Monday estimated that India will overtake China to become the world’s most populous country in 2023.

India’s population is estimated at 1.41 billion in 2022 while that of China is 1.42 billion.

John Wilmoth, director of the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

He said on Monday that India has so far claimed permanent membership of the Security Council, but it is certain to become the world’s most populous country.

This will make his claim stronger. Wilmoth said this during the press conference on the question asked on the effect of the population report.

He praised India and described it as a sustainable economy. Along with this, he said that he has brought down the birth rate in a better way.
