The gruesome massacre has been condemned by LG Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and leaders of the People’s Democratic Party, Congress, and BJP. Officials said the operation is concentrated in Kuntwara, Ohli, and Munjala Dhar hilly areas and additional forces have been sent this morning.
Officials said security forces have intensified efforts by deploying drones and sniffer dogs. A helicopter was seen hovering over the forest this morning.
The spokesperson said that later pictures of their bodies went viral on social media and family members have confirmed their identity. Officials said Ahmad and Kumar had gone to graze cattle in the Munjala Dhar forest of Adhwari but did not return.
Amid reports of their abduction and subsequent killing by terrorists, police teams fanned out to find them. Kumar’s brother Prithvi told the news agency that his brother and Nazir were abducted and killed by terrorists. They were the village’s protectors and had gone to graze cattle as usual.
He said the family is in deep shock as Kumar’s killing comes just a week after the death of their father Amar Chand. A local source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the village came to know about the killings when the terrorists used the victims’ phones to share pictures of their killings.
Kishtwar along with other districts of the Jammu region like Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Udhampur, Doda and Kathua have witnessed a rise in terrorist attacks this year which security agencies have attributed to attempts by cross-border masters to revive terrorism in the otherwise peaceful region.
