In a deeply tragic turn of events, 34 devotees lost their lives and dozens were injured following a devastating landslide near Adkunwari on the Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra route. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹9 lakh for the families of the deceased.

Compensation for the affected families

The compensation includes ₹5 lakh from the Shrine Board and ₹4 lakh from the Disaster Management Fund. “There is no price for a human life,” Sinha stated solemnly, “but we hope this support helps the grieving families.”

The incident occurred after a sudden cloudburst triggered a landslide and flash floods, burying many pilgrims under debris. All injured individuals have been admitted to Narayana Hospital in Kakdiyal, Katra, where medical teams are working around the clock.

Sinha personally visited the hospital to check on the injured and confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have been briefed. Both leaders assured full support for ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The pilgrimage has been temporarily suspended, and arrangements are being made to return the bodies of the deceased to their families. Authorities had issued a weather advisory before the incident, and emergency protocols were activated immediately.
