A meeting of the Association of South Asian Countries (ASEAN) has agreed to ban the use of stolen and counterfeit mobile phones.

In the second meeting of the Digital Ministers of ASEAN, it was approved to prepare an action plan for this ban. The second meeting of ASEAN Digital Ministers was held through a virtual medium.

Minister of State for Communications Dewoosinh Chauhan and Minister of Transport and Communications of Myanmar Admiral Tin Aung San co-chaired the meeting.

The whole of ASEAN is affected.

The entire ASEAN including India is affected by theft and use of fake mobile phones and this issue was raised prominently in the meeting.

According to the information given by the Department of Communications, along with the ban on the use of stolen mobiles,

The action plan includes increasing the access of WiFi, providing Internet at the national level, in the area related to information and communication technology with each other in 5G service.

Issues such as sharing of information were also covered.

Portal was launched.

To combat and block mobile phone thefts in India, the Department of Communications launched a portal at the end of 2019. This portal was mainly created to help the people of Delhi-NCR.

The Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) system attached to the Department of Communications monitors matters such as theft and security of mobile handsets.

The meeting is held every year.

The ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Forum includes communications ministers from Brunei, Cambodia.

Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam meet annually.

Dialogue partner countries in the meeting.

Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Russia, the UK, and the US also participate.

The meeting discussed and deliberated on topics related to strengthening regional digital cooperation in keeping with the spirit of digital inclusion and integration.

Importance of communication technology.

Chouhan said that information and communication technology strengthens and enables democratic systems and institutions through enhanced exchanges between citizens and the government.

He said that the use of information and communication technology encourages freedom of expression, human rights, and free flow of information along with giving opportunities to citizens.

Apart from this, it has an important role in changing the lives of people in rural areas.
