Tamil Nadu Puducherry may wreak havoc, cyclone in Kanchipuram.

The low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has turned into a severe cyclone ‘Prevention’. The storm is likely to hit the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry tonight.

During this time, winds will go at a speed of 100-110 kmph, which will reach 145 kmph later. The Meteorological Department is keeping a close watch on it.

The department said that heavy to very heavy rainfall may also occur at some places due to the impact of the storm. The impact of the cyclone is now being seen in many areas.

The process of heavy rains has also started in Kanchipuram.

According to the department, cyclone prevention will take the form of a severe cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours and it is 380 km south-east of Puducherry and 430 km from Chennai.

A cyclonic storm will arrive between Karaikal and Mamallapuram along the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with strong winds late in the evening.

The administration of Tamil Nadu and the neighboring Union Territory of Puducherry has been put on alert in the wake of the storm.

The precautionary measures including the evacuation of people from vulnerable areas are being taken by the government.

22 teams of NDRF deployed

The NDRF has deployed 22 teams, including a total of 1,200 personnel, for rescue operations in view of the devastation caused by the storm.

It has 12 teams in Tamil Nadu, three in Puducherry, and seven in Andhra Pradesh.

At the same time, the commandants of the battalions located at NDRF headquarters, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are in touch with the concerned state officials.

Apart from this, more teams have been kept in reserve in Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Thrissur (Kerala), and Mundali (Odisha) if needed.

Center reviewed the preparations

The National Disaster Management Committee (NCMC), headed by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, also reviewed the preparedness to deal with prevention.

All the concerned officials have been instructed that the preparations should be such that no one is killed and services like electricity and telecom can be restored at the earliest.

Disaster relief funds have also been assured to be released soon to the affected states.

Impact started appearing in Chennai

Due to the rains caused by the cyclone, there was traffic jam at various places in Chennai due to flooding of roads.

More jam was observed at Anna Salai, GST Road and Kathipada Junction. Its photos also played well on Internet media.

To monitor the situation in the city, 15 IAS officers have been deployed. The Chennai Municipal Corporation will run 176 relief camps.
