The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday told a court here that the murder of a chemist in Amravati for allegedly supporting Nupur Sharma has “international ramifications”.

At the same time, the court extended the NIA custody of the seven accused arrested in the case till July 22.

Chemist Umesh Kolhe was stabbed to death on June 21. He was returning home at night after closing his shop.

Umesh Kolhe had supported the remarks of suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma about Prophet Mohammad.

The NIA has taken over the investigation of this incident from Amravati Police. The agency produced the accused before a special NIA court here on Friday after their initial custody period ended.

The NIA requested the accused to be remanded for eight more days, saying the matter is very serious and has “national and international ramifications”.

The agency denied defense lawyers’ claim that the incident was the result of a fight between friends. Defense lawyer Sharif Sheikh opposed the extension, saying there was no solid ground.

He claimed that Kolhe’s murder took place before the Udaipur incident and the investigating agency is trying to give it a different color.

After hearing the arguments of both sides, the court extended the custody of the accused.
