For the first time in India, a suspected case of monkeypox has been reported from Kerala.

A person who returned from abroad has been admitted to a hospital in Kerala after he showed symptoms of monkeypox. State Health Minister Veena George gave this information here on Thursday.

Health Minister Veena George said today that the passenger’s samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing, the case can be confirmed only after the test results are received.

Without disclosing further details, George said the man had symptoms of monkeypox and was in close contact with a monkeypox patient on his foreign trip.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted from animals to humans) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in patients with smallpox, although it is clinically less severe.

Monkeypox is spread to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or through material contaminated with the virus.

The monkeypox virus is spread from person to person through close contact with contaminated material such as wounds, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and bedding.

Let us tell you that cases of monkeypox have been found in many countries including Britain, Germany, and Italy.

Although patient suffering from this disease has not been reported in India, the central government is starting the process of tracing, treatment, and testing as a precaution.

ICMR has approved the testing of Monkeypask in 15 major laboratories in the country. It also includes Virology Lab located at Government Medical College.
