Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has died in a Dubai hospital after a long illness.

Former President Pervez Musharraf has died at the age of 79 in a hospital in Dubai, according to a leading news agency in Pakistan. His family confirmed this on Sunday.

Long-suffering former military leader Pervez Musharraf was being treated at an American hospital in Dubai.

General Pervez Musharraf was born on 11 August 1943 in Delhi during the British Raj. He was commissioned on 19 April 1961 at the Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul.

Upon receiving the assignment, Musharraf enlisted in the Army Special Forces. Pervez Musharraf also fought in the 1965 and 1971 wars with India.

In 1998 he was promoted to general, and General Pervez Musharraf took over as Chief of Staff of the Army (COAS).

A year later, on October 12, 1999, General Musharraf seized power in Pakistan in a coup. Assuming the reins of government, General Pervez Musharraf has become Pakistan’s longest-serving president.

He was elected president through a referendum in 2002 and served until 2008.

It was during Musharraf’s tenure that Pakistan accepted the Taliban’s offer to become an ally of the United States in the fight against terrorism after the 9/11 attacks.

Musharraf was indicted in November 2007 for using an unconstitutional measure to remove a Supreme Court justice.

After that, a great movement of lawyers began. Pervez Musharraf stepped down from the presidency on 18 August 2008 after the movement was revitalized.

General Pervez Musharraf has been receiving treatment in Dubai since March 2016.

Musharraf’s aide and former intelligence minister, Fawad Chaudhry, said last year that former Pakistani president Musharraf was in critical condition and was on a ventilator.

It is noteworthy that former military ruler Musharraf, who ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008, is on a wanted list in connection with the assassination of former PM Benazir Bhutto and the cleric Lal Masjid.

He was also tried for sedition in 2007 for suspending the constitution.
