Supreme Court To Soon Hear UAPA Against Lawyers

Supreme Court to soon hear UAPA against lawyers, journalists, and activists in Tripura.

In Tripura, the matter of imposition of UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) against lawyers, journalists, and activists has reached the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has now agreed to hear the matter soon. The UAPA FIR has been challenged in the petition filed in the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice NV Ramana said he would soon give a date for a hearing. Advocate Prashant Bhushan has demanded an early hearing of the matter from the CJI.

CJI said that why don’t you go to the High Court regarding this matter? On this Prashant Bhushan said that we have also challenged the Unlawful Activities (UAPA) Act in this matter.

On this, the CJI said that he would soon give a date for a hearing.

In fact, Tripura Police has registered cases against lawyers, activists and journalists, and several social media users under UAPA, criminal conspiracy, and forgery charges.

Along with this, notices have been given to the officials of Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to freeze such accounts and give all the information of the account holders.

Violence against Hindus in Bangladesh during and after Durga Puja in October was protested by several groups taking out rallies.

Incidents of alleged vandalism of houses, shops, and some mosques were reported during these rallies. Cases have been registered against him for writing social media posts on these incidents.

What is UAPA Act?

As per Section 15 of the UAPA Act, an act was done with intent to cause or is likely to spread terror in India with intent to endanger the unity, integrity, security, sovereignty of India is an act of terrorism.

This includes businesses ranging from bomb blasts to counterfeit notes. In this, there is a provision of imprisonment for a person ranging from five years to life imprisonment.
