Former Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu has suffered a major setback. The Supreme Court has sentenced Sidhu to one-year rigorous imprisonment in the 34-year-old road rage case.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had released him by imposing a fine of Rs 1000.

Sidhu was protesting in Patiala on the issue of inflation riding on an elephant when the Supreme Court was pronouncing the sentence.

According to law experts, Sidhu can file a curative petition against this decision.

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s reaction to the sentence indicated surrender.

Navjot Singh Sidhu has given his reaction to the sentence. He tweeted that he will present himself for the glory of the law. It is believed from this tweet that Sidhu will surrender before the court or police.

On the other hand, Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal said that the Supreme Court has done justice today. The victim’s family was demanding justice for many years.

Navjot Sidhu was protesting in Patiala against inflation when the sentence was being sentenced.

Sidhu is accused of assaulting Gurnam Singh 34 years ago in a road dispute in Patiala. Gurnam Singh died in the hospital.

This case of Road Raid dates back to December 27, 1988. Navjot Singh Sidhu had run into an old man named Gurnam Singh while going by car in Patiala.

It is alleged that in anger Navjot Sidhu punched him, after which Gurnam Singh died. The Patiala police had registered a case of culpable homicide against Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh.

The trial court had acquitted Navjot Singh Sidhu in 1999 due to a lack of evidence, but the aggrieved party reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The relatives of Gurnam Singh alleged that Sidhu punched Gurnam Singh on the head and Gurnam Singh suffered a brain hemorrhage, leading to his death.

In 2006, the High Court sentenced Sidhu to three years’ imprisonment. Sidhu challenged this decision in the Supreme Court.

From there he got relief and the Supreme Court released him in 2018 by imposing a fine of one thousand rupees.

After this, the relatives of Gurnam Singh filed a review petition in the Supreme Court. After this, today the Supreme Court has sentenced him to one year in jail.

In 2006, when the High Court sentenced Sidhu to three years’ imprisonment, he was in the BJP and was an MP from Amritsar.

He had resigned from the membership of the Lok Sabha. He had to contest the election again and he won again.
