A special court in Mumbai on Wednesday granted bail to Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut in the alleged money laundering case related to the Patra ‘Chawl’ redevelopment project.

Sanjay Raut is currently in judicial custody and lodged in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai.

The Enforcement Directorate arrested Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut in July this year for his alleged involvement in a money laundering case related to alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of Patra ‘Chawl’ in suburban Goregaon.

Sanjay Raut, in his bail plea, had claimed that the case against him was an example of “abuse of power” and “political vendetta”.

However, the ED had opposed Raut’s plea, saying he played a key role in the money laundering case related to the Patra Chawl redevelopment and worked “behind the scenes” to avoid money laundering.

The ED probe is related to alleged financial irregularities related to the redevelopment of Patra Chawl and financial transactions allegedly related to his wife and associates.

The Enforcement Directorate, which is probing the case, has requested the court not to give effect to the bail order till Friday.

Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the ED, presented his side in the court and said that we need time to read the order, it is not an unreasonable request.

It is the order of the court, it has the power to enforce the order at a later date. I should be given some chance and opportunity by the court.

After this, the court said that we will take a decision on the request of the ED after the afternoon session.
