Science and Sports: How AI technology is helping FIFA to detect offside?

In this time’s FIFA World Cup (FIFA World Cup 2022), the off-side is being investigated a lot. After most of the goals, the Offside Rule in Soccer is being investigated through new technology.

It is like checking run out or no ball through DRS or the third umpire of cricket.

In the Tunisia-France match, a last-minute goal was disallowed for offside as a result of this technique, which resulted in a 1–0 Tunisian victory.

But after all, is this new technology equipped with Artificial Intelligence, which is being used on such a large scale and with precision and is affecting the results of the matches?

Science and Sports: What is this system?

This system is called Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SOAT), in which 12 cameras are mounted on the roof of the stadium and they are used and monitor the movements of each player.

But to decide the offside, Saot uses artificial intelligence in which he tracks the players and the ball. The special thing about this system is that it captures 50 activities in a second.

Special kind of sensor in the ball.

This is the reason why the off-side rule is so much discussed in this World Cup.

At the same time, a special sensor has been installed in the football used in this World Cup, which is called Al Rihla, which means travel in Arabic.

This helps Saot to know which player last touched the ball and where.

Two decision-makers.

With this technique, it is also easy for the system to know whether the last time the ball was hit by the defender of the team or the striker of the opposing team.

But more importantly, it also shows that no player of the opposing team had reached the ball before or ahead of the player of the defending team. On the basis of which the offside is decided.

How is the decision made?

With such accuracy, it is not possible for the referee to decide the offside in such a short time, whereas there are even linemen to help the referee.

Whenever Saot detects an off-side, it sends an alert to the video match officials who, like cricket’s third umpire, inform the referee who has to make the final call.

That is why this system is called semi-automatic.

Science and Sports: Difference from the previous system.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system was commonly used in football matches. The system takes 70 seconds to detect the off-side, which is a long time compared to SAOT.

In the VAR technique, the rights have to identify the correct kick moment and they have to identify the offside by themselves. But in SAOT they confirm the offside of the system’s help.

Science and Sports: 3D animation on the big screen.

The reverse is true with the new system, which completes the process in seconds, making off-side decisions much quicker and more accurately.

If the referee confirms Scott’s suggestion, the system produces a 3D animation and is shown on a large screen for spectators at the stadium to see.

In this technique, identification and tracking of objects is used, which is an important subject of Artificial Intelligence.

One method in this technique is the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in which many things are detected layer by layer in the object is solid or soft, then the size and shape, etc. are used.

After accumulating a lot of data, the system is able to detect off-side movements immediately.
