Rohit Sharma is fit for the series against West Indies, update on Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja.
India’s limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma is fit and ready to lead the team in the limited-overs series against West Indies starting in Ahmedabad.
There will be a three-match ODI series between the two countries from February 6 and then a three-match T20 series will also be played.
However, the selection committee meeting to be held this week will be interesting as the places of some senior players like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin may be in danger after a clean sweep in the ODI series against South Africa.
Rohit is ready to lead the team.
Rohit, who was ruled out of the South Africa tour after a strain in his left leg, is all set to lead the side. Three T20 matches against West Indies will be played in Kolkata from February 16 to 20.
A BCCI source said, “Rohit is fit and available for the series against West Indies. Rohit’s rehabilitation will take more than seven weeks till the start of the series against West Indies.
He has already started training in Mumbai and is expected to travel to Bengaluru for fitness tests and get formal approval from the National Cricket Academy.
For now, Rohit will be made the Test captain.
It is almost certain that for the time being Rohit will be made the Test captain.
However, the BCCI is also looking at other options regarding the responsibility and workload of leading the team to two consecutive World Cups in 2022 and 2023.
It is learned that KL Rahul’s first series as the captain did not go as well as expected.
For the time being, he will have to remain under Rohit’s guidance till he is considered ready to lead the team in the future.
All eyes will be on Rahul’s performance
India lost all four international matches in South Africa under Rahul and decision-makers in Indian cricket believe that he could not lead the way as captain.
It is believed that all eyes will be on Rahul’s performance as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants in the upcoming season of IPL.
Hardik Pandya starts bowling in the nets.
Hardik Pandya has started bowling in the nets. Whether he will be able to bowl at his full potential is not yet clear.
But with Venkatesh Iyer’s inexperience at No.6 and head coach Rahul Dravid’s admitting that Hardik was missed, the Baroda player’s way back against the West Indies can be clear.
When will Hardik return-
“You have to remember that after the T20 World Cup, Hardik was dropped from the T20 team and was not rested due to fitness,” the source said.
The selectors wanted to send him a message after his poor performance in the T20 World Cup but he is a good player and cannot be left out for long.
If not against West Indies then he will definitely come back against Sri Lanka.
Updated about Ravindra Jadeja.
Ravindra Jadeja also looks close to regaining full fitness and is expected to make a comeback against either the West Indies or Sri Lanka.
Management of Jasprit Bumrah’s workload is crucial for the Indian team and it is likely that he may be rested from all six matches.
Bumrah played all six matches in South Africa which included three Tests and three 50-over matches. He also scored the most overs (104.5 in Tests and 30 in ODIs) during this period.
