Rocket Fired In Israel: Rocket Fired In Israel Amid Violence In West Bank

Rocket Fired In Israel: Rocket fired in Israel amid violence in West Bank.

Palestinian militants fired a rocket into Israel from Gaza on Saturday, causing no casualties. There was no immediate claim of an attack, the first in over a month, according to the military.

However, Islamic Jihad, one of Gaza’s larger armed groups, threatened retaliation after Israeli troops killed two of its leaders in the West Bank city of Jenin on Thursday.

Witnesses said the Israeli army retaliated by shelling two observation posts east of Gaza City, operated by Hamas, the region’s Islamist ruler.

The rocket attack came as bloodshed escalated in the occupied West Bank, which drew international criticism of the Israeli military for its use of lethal force against Palestinian civilians.

Criticism has focused on Friday’s killing of 22-year-old Ammar Hadi Mufleh in disputed circumstances in the city of Huwara, south of Nablus.

UN Middle East peace envoy Tor Vansland said he was “horrified” by the killing “during a scuffle with an Israeli soldier”.

The European Union said it is “deeply concerned about the increasing level of violence” after 10 Palestinians were killed by Israeli security forces in recent days.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said, “Such unacceptable facts must be investigated and full accountability must be held.”

Under international law, deadly force is only justified in situations in which an extreme and approaching hazard to existence exists.

According to the Israeli version of events, Mufleh tried to open the car door of an Israeli couple before stabbing a border policeman.

A senior Border Police officer then shot Mufleh, saying that the Palestinian had grabbed for his weapon.

Palestinian municipal official Wajeh Odeh told the news agency the shooting occurred after a “quarrel”. An Israeli soldier pinned the Palestinian to the floor and shot him, Odeh said.

Israel`s overseas ministry answered angrily to the criticism. This reaction is a complete distortion of reality, he tweeted. This is not ‘Mayhem’ – this is a terror attack!

Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said he fully supported the border police officer’s decision to shoot to save his life. “Our security forces will continue to work resolutely against terrorism,” he said.

At least 145 Palestinians and 26 Israelis have been killed in violence in Israel and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the heaviest toll since 2015.
