Rajiv Gandhi remembered On 76th birth Anniversary, various leaders across the political spectrum paid tribute to the former prime minister, few facts about him. Rajiv Gandhi became PM at the age of 40, he surprised everyone. Rajiv Gandhi was on a tour of West Bengal on 31 October 1984 when Indira Gandhi was killed. He immediately returned to Delhi upon receiving this news.
The post of PM had become vacant due to the death of Indira Gandhi, which was very important to fill. In such a situation, the Congress met in a hurry, and Rajiv Gandhi was unanimously elected the leader of the party. He was then sworn in as the PM. Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister at the age of just 40. In this sense, he was also the youngest Prime Minister. His becoming PM was surprising for many Congress leaders. The reason for this was to be new in politics.
He had spent some time in Congress too. After the accidental death of Sanjay Gandhi in 1980, Indira Gandhi brought Rajiv Gandhi into politics to fill her gap. After becoming a member of the Congress, he was made the General Secretary of the party. After coming to the Congress, he had a huge responsibility on his shoulders to successfully carry out Asian Games in Delhi. He did it well. Before joining politics, he was a pilot in Indian Airlines. Rajiv Gandhi reached the Lok Sabha for the first time by winning the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi.
After the assassination of Indira Gandhi, when the Lok Sabha elections were held in the country, there was a wave of sympathy among the general public about the Congress. In this election, the Congress led by Rajiv Gandhi won a record number of seats. He had a large number of young ministers in his cabinet, so he was called the leader of a new generation. The reason for this was also that he started talking about the 21st century after becoming his PM. Being a young PM, the country also had great expectations from him. The younger generation saw him as their ideal.
But it was during his tenure that after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, anti-Sikh riots in the country spoiled the whole atmosphere. It was not the only issue during his tenure that caused his image to be tarnished, but the Bhopal gas scandal in December 1984, the Shah Bano case, the 1987 Bofors brokerage case, damaged his and the party’s image. Apart from this, sending the Peace Army to Sri Lanka in 1987 also proved to be a big mistake of his tenure. During this time he also visited Sri Lanka.
During this time, while he was inspecting the salute guard, Sri Lankan Navy soldier Vijita Rohane even attacked him with the butt of the rifle. However, his attack failed and the security personnel accompanying Rajiv Gandhi immediately assaulted him and captured the jawan. Rohane was sentenced to two and a half years for attempting to assassinate the foreign head of state. The party had to face a crushing defeat in 1989 due to several consecutive cases and failures against them. He was killed by a human bomb on May 21, 1991 by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam militants while campaigning for the elections.
Despite many accusations and criticisms, there are many things for which Rajiv Gandhi can never be underestimated. He is considered the father of the information revolution in India. He is credited with the computer and telecom revolution in the country. He also got a 33 percent reservation for women in local self-government institutions. Rajiv Gandhi had also given the right to vote for the youth under 21 years of age, from 21 years of age to the general public.
Rajiv Gandhi was from a large political family but he remained completely out of it before entering active politics. He was the sixth Prime Minister of India. Born in Mumbai on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi married Antonia Maino of Italy. We all know her today as Sonia Gandhi. She met Rajiv Gandhi while studying in Cambridge.
