Priority should be given to the elderly people for treatment in private hospitals, SC directive.

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed that all private hospitals prioritize the admission of senior citizens in view of the coronavirus.

This instruction has been given in view of the greater fear of senior citizens being affected by the corona. Earlier on 4 August 2020, the Supreme Court gave this directive to government hospitals.

In the trial of the case, Justices Ashok Bhushan and RS Reddy amended their order dated 4 August 2020. Senior advocate Ashwini Kumar filed a petition on the matter.

He had given his petition in the court regarding old-age pension, on which the Supreme Court today issued this instruction.

Ashwini Kumar also stated that no state other than Odisha and Punjab has taken any step on the instructions given earlier. The top court gave three weeks’ time to other states for this and issued a directive to reply.

In the previous hearing, the court said that all elderly people eligible for old-age pension should be given a timely pension and that during the covid-19 epidemic, states should provide them essential medicines, sanitizers, masks, and other essential items.

The Supreme Court had said that in view of the high probability of elderly people suffering from coronavirus infection, they should be admitted on a priority basis in government hospitals.

The administration of the hospital should take immediate steps to diagnose their problems.

The second phase of corona vaccination has started in the country on 1 March. In this phase, the vaccine is being administered to the elderly over 60 years of age and those above 45 years of age with serious illnesses.

For vaccination, people are registering on apps like Covin Two-Point Zero Portal or Arogya Setu.
