Petition in the Supreme Court regarding VVPAT will be heard tomorrow, Before the results: Assembly Election Results 2022.
The results of the assembly elections held in five states are coming on March 10. Ahead of the results, the Supreme Court has given its consent to hear a PIL filed regarding Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT).
The petition has sought verification of VVPATs as soon as the counting of EVM votes begins. The Supreme Court will hear the matter on March 9.
The petitioner has demanded that the VVPAT slips be tallied at the beginning of the counting of EVM votes instead of at the end of the counting.
What did the Supreme Court say?
The Supreme Court also made remarks during the hearing. The court said, ‘We have informed the Election Commission about this. Let us see what can be done about it.
The results of the assembly elections will come on March 10.
Significantly, assembly elections have been completed in five states of the country UP, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur.
Elections in UP were held in seven phases on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, and March 3 and 7. In Uttarakhand and Goa, polling was held in a single phase on February 14.
Polling was held in Punjab on February 20. On the other hand, Manipur went to the polls in two phases on February 28 and March 5. Counting of votes in all these states will take place on March 10.
What is VVPAT?
The VVPAT machine is attached to the EVM machine. After casting the vote in the EVM, a slip is generated from the VVPAT machine.
This slip contains information about which party or candidate you have cast your vote for. VVPAT slip confirms to whom your vote has gone.
The name of the candidate and his election symbol are printed on the VVPAT slip. Its slip is not given to the voter.
