Operation Sindoor
Operation Sindoor: Northern Army Commander Lt. Gen. Prateek Sharma reveals how the Indian Army destroyed 9 terror camps in Pakistan and PoK during Operation Sindoor. Over 100 terrorists were killed in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives.
After the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 innocent civilians, the Indian Army retaliated with a powerful military action – Operation Sindoor. Launched on May 7, this operation targeted 9 major terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), killing an estimated 100+ terrorists.
For the first time, Northern Army Commander Lt. Gen. Prateek Sharma has revealed exclusive details about the planning, intelligence gathering, and challenges faced during this high-risk mission.
Speaking at NDTV’s Defense Summit, General Sharma explained that the toughest task was locating the hidden terrorist camps. Political leadership had given a clear directive: identify and eliminate those responsible for the Pahalgam massacre.
Out of 9 identified terror bases, 7 were assigned to the Northern Command, while 2 high-profile camps in Muridke and Bahawalpur were targeted by the Indian Air Force (IAF). While IAF bases near the border were easy to detect, the camps in the dense forests and mountains of PoK posed a major challenge, as technical intelligence and human sources could not easily reach them.
On May 7, Indian forces launched precision missile strikes on the identified terror camps. Within half an hour, Pakistan violated the ceasefire and opened fire across the border. However, the Indian Army was fully prepared and responded with massive counter-attacks, sending a strong message that India follows a zero-tolerance policy on terrorism.
General Sharma emphasized that just like the Uri surgical strike (2016) and the Balakot airstrike (2019), Operation Sindoor demonstrated India’s military strength and political resolve.
Despite the success of the missile strikes, intelligence revealed that three key terrorists had managed to escape into the Valley. The Indian Army launched Operation Mahadev, a 97-day-long search mission, in the forests, hills, and caves of Kashmir. Finally, in late July, the remaining terrorists were neutralized, marking the completion of India’s retaliation.
Lt. Gen. Sharma also highlighted how terror groups have changed their modus operandi. “Terrorists no longer hide in villages or settlements. They now operate from mountains, forests, and caves, making operations longer and more complex,” he said.
With over 100 terrorists eliminated and major camps destroyed, Operation Sindoor stands as a historic retaliation against cross-border terrorism. It sends a strong message to Pakistan and terror networks that India will strike back decisively whenever innocent lives are targeted.
