NIA Raids 10 Locations in Jammu
MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, has sought interim bail or interim custody parole to attend the Parliament session. The petition will be heard in the High Court on Thursday. The NIA had filed an affidavit in pursuance of the order passed by a division bench headed by Justice Pratibha M Singh on March 12.

It said that the present appeal of the appellant-accused Abdul Rashid Sheikh under Section 21 of the NIA Act, 2008, seeking interim bail or alternative custody parole to attend the fourth winter session of the Lok Sabha from March 11 to April 4, be dismissed as it is not maintainable and is also liable to be dismissed on merits.
The NIA has also said that the mere status of the appellant as an MP does not entitle him to claim exemption from the effect of being in judicial custody. The agency said that it is clearly stated in the law that as long as the MLA / MP is in lawful custody, he has no statutory right to participate in the session of the House.
It also said that the appellant is using his presence in Parliament to escape the rigors of imprisonment as he has failed to obtain bail. The agency has said that the appellant is an influential MP from Baramulla. It is feared that because many witnesses are from Jammu and Kashmir, the appellant may influence them.
The Delhi High Court on March 12 issued a notice to the NIA on the petition of Baramulla MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh. The court also asked the NIA to file an affidavit if there is any objection to the petition.
The special NIA court rejected his earlier plea for custody parole. Engineer Rashid is an accused in a terror case. Senior advocate N Hariharan appeared on behalf of Engineer Rashid and argued that he was seeking permission to attend the ongoing session of Parliament. The senior advocate said that he was also granted two days of custody parole to attend Parliament in February 2025.
The court asked when is the Parliament session going on? The senior advocate said that it is till April 4. NIA SPP Akshay Malik opposed the petition and said that the earlier order was passed in a situation when there was no designated court. Therefore, only two days of custody parole was granted.
