Naxalites on the Backfoot: Key Steps to End Naxalism by 2026

Naxalites on the Backfoot: Naxalism on the decline! Learn how forward posts, strict enforcement, and political will are driving this transformation.  The Naxalites were demoralized by the operation of the security forces, and how the accurate strategy turned the tables. Political willpower and accurate strategy. The success achieved in demoralizing the Naxalites within the last year can be understood with these two words. Exactly a year ago on 21 January 2024, Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah gave the green signal to the roadmap to end Naxalism in a meeting with the top leadership of Chhattisgarh and the heads of security forces in Raipur.

Unlike the Bhupesh Baghel government of Chhattisgarh, the newly appointed Vishnu Dev Sai government showed the political will to implement this roadmap and the result is in front of everyone. There are three important points in Amit Shah’s roadmap to completely eradicate Naxalism.

Naxalites completely defeated

Filling the security gap by setting up forward posts of security forces in the core areas of Naxalites, completely closing the source of funding to Naxalites with the help of ED using the Money Laundering Prevention Act and ensuring strict punishment by getting NIA to investigate the accused involved in Naxalite activities using the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Needless to say, excellent work was done on all three fronts with the cooperation of the state administration.

Naxalites on the Backfoot: Ban on Naxalite funding

After 2019, 290 forward posts of security forces were established, including 58 forward posts in 2024 alone. This year in 2025, the target is to set up a total of 88 forward posts of security forces. State governments, ED, and NIA have seized properties worth Rs 72 crore related to Naxal funding.

At the same time, the  NIA is investigating a total of 96 cases against Naxalites, of which 56 cases were registered in the last three years. Chargesheets have been filed in 77 of these cases. The formation of advanced security posts may seem like a small thing. But it is proving to be an effective strategy in the campaign against Naxalites. With the formation of advanced security posts, Naxalites can’t carry out activities within a radius of three to four kilometers. Secondly, with the help of these posts, the government machinery and public welfare and development schemes are also reaching the villagers.

Target to end Naxalism by 2026

Amit Shah has set a target of establishing a security advance post every three to four kilometers in the entire Naxal-affected area from Abujhmad to Dandakaranya and beyond by March 2026. These advanced posts wonder that 290 Naxalites were killed in 2024 as compared to 50 Naxalites in 2023. Not only this, 28 Naxalites have been killed till January 21 this year.

The establishment of 88 new forward security posts in 2025 will further increase the operational strength of the security forces. After all the security posts are established, the Naxalites will not have any safe area to carry out their activities and only after that the end of Naxalism will be declared.
