Murder case of former PM Rajiv Gandhi: six accused including Nalini will be released, the Supreme Court ordered.

The Supreme Court on Friday gave an important verdict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

The Supreme Court has directed the release of six accused, including Nalini and RP Ravichandran, who are serving life sentences in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

While ordering his release, the Supreme Court said that the Tamil Nadu government had earlier recommended his release to the governor.

In May, another convict Perarivalan was already ordered to be released by the Supreme Court.

The murder case of former PM Rajiv Gandhi: The conduct of these people in jail was found good.

The Supreme Court in its order, S. Nalini, Jayakumar, RP Ravichandran, Robert Pias, Suthendraraja, and Sriharan have been released.

Their conduct in prison was found to be good and all of them had also obtained various degrees during their stay in jail.

Tamil Nadu government had recommended release in 2018.

The Supreme Court said that the Tamil Nadu cabinet had recommended their release on September 9, 2018, and that opinion would be binding on the Governor, before whom the convicts had filed the apology petition.

Perarivalan had served a jail term of over 30 years.

Using its extraordinary power under Article 142 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court had on 18 May 2022 ordered the release of Perarivalan, who had served a prison sentence of more than 30 years.

Former PM Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on the night of May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu by a female suicide bomber, identified at an election rally as Dhanu.

A total of 41 people were made accused in this case. Twelve people had died and three had escaped. The remaining 26 were caught. It had Sri Lankan and Indian citizens.
