Mukhtar Ansari To Be Shifted From Punjab To UP Jail

Mukhtar Ansari to be shifted from Punjab to UP jail in two weeks orders Supreme court. The Supreme Court has ordered gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari to shift from Punjab to UP jail in two weeks.

The court gave this order on Friday while approving the petition of the Uttar Pradesh government. The UP government had asked the court to transfer Ansari from Punjab to UP jail.

The Punjab government and Ansari opposed the UP petition. He is lodged in Ropar Jail in Punjab since January 2019 in an alleged extortion case. Now the MP / MLA court of Prayagraj will decide in which jail he will be kept.

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and RS Reddy ruled. The court also dismissed Ansari’s plea. He had demanded that the cases registered against him in Uttar Pradesh be transferred outside the state.

The UP government wants to bring Mukhtar back and settle the cases against him.

There was a political and legal war between the Uttar Pradesh and Punjab governments over the transfer of UP jail to Mukhtar Ansari. The petition was opposed by the Punjab government besides Mukhtar Ansari.

Punjab government’s plea

On March 4, the Punjab government told the Supreme Court that the Yogi Adityanath-led government had no fundamental right to demand the transfer of Banda jail.

Punjab had questioned the Uttar Pradesh petition filed under Article 32 and also argued that Mukhtar’s health was deteriorating. At the same time, Mukhtar described his life as a threat in Uttar Pradesh.

UP government retaliated on the plea of the Punjab government.

At the same time, the Uttar Pradesh government had told the Supreme Court that by handing over UP, the Punjab government is protecting Ansari, who became a gangster-turned-politician, from ‘shamelessness’.

Where a case has been filed against him for several heinous crimes.

The UP government said that in addition to more than 30 FIRs against Ansari, more than 14 criminal cases including heinous crimes of murder are pending under the Criminal and Gangster Act.

Uttar Pradesh alleged collusion between Mukhtar Ansari and the Punjab Police. The Punjab government denied these claims and questioned the petition filed by the UP government.
