Major Security Reshuffle in Jammu & Kashmir
Major Security Reshuffle in Jammu & Kashmir: The Centre is planning a major security overhaul in Jammu & Kashmir. CRPF will take charge of internal security, while Rashtriya Rifles will be redeployed along the Line of Control (LoC) to strengthen border defense amid rising infiltration threats.
The central government is preparing for a major reshuffle in the security structure of Jammu and Kashmir, in what officials are calling a “strategic reorganization.” According to reliable sources, the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) are likely to be gradually withdrawn from the interiors of the Union Territory and redeployed along the Line of Control (LoC) to counter increasing infiltration attempts.
In their place, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will be tasked with managing internal security and counter-terrorism operations across Jammu and Kashmir. Discussions are actively underway between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs, though officials clarified that a final decision has not yet been made.
A senior CRPF officer confirmed that once the transfer of responsibility is formalized, the force will not only handle law and order but also play a significant role in anti-terror operations in the Valley. Already, three CRPF battalions have replaced Rashtriya Rifles units in Udhampur and Kathua districts. With each battalion comprising around 800 personnel, a similar restructuring is expected in Kashmir after the current phase in Jammu is completed.
The redeployment of RR on the LoC comes in the backdrop of heightened concerns over cross-border infiltration, particularly after the Pahalgam terror attack in April, in which investigators suspect the attackers infiltrated months earlier from Pakistan.
Officials revealed that this plan has been in the works for nearly two years and is part of a larger post-Article 370 security blueprint that the Centre believes reflects significant improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of the state’s special status in August 2019.
Former BSF DIG SS Kothiyal emphasized that the CRPF’s expertise lies in internal security, while the Army is best suited for guarding borders. Internal security analyst Prakash Singh also suggested considering the Border Security Force (BSF), which played a crucial role in counter-terrorism operations in Kashmir during the 1990s.

This security restructuring in Jammu & Kashmir is being closely watched as it could mark a turning point in the region’s counter-terrorism strategy and overall peace-building efforts.
