The court had reserved its decision for May 10. During the hearing, the State Backward Classes Welfare Commission presented a report on the basis of reservations for backward classes in the state.

In this, it has been recommended to give 35 percent reservation to OBCs. At the same time, it was said on behalf of the government that we are ready to hold elections as per the directions of the court.

The court had directed to conduct a study to give reservation to the backward classes in the three-tier (village, district, and district) panchayat and urban bodies (city council, municipality, and municipal corporation) in the state.

After which the state government had constituted the State Backward Classes Welfare Commission, which after getting the voters’ list examined, claimed that 48 percent of the voters in the state are OBCs.

On this basis, the report was submitted to the government recommending 35 percent reservation for OBCs in the three-tier panchayat and urban body elections.
