Kerala Assembly issues notice to Enforcement Directorate, seeks clarification on action.

The Privileges and Ethics Committee of the Kerala Legislative Assembly issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate seeking clarification on its action on the Life Mission project.

The decision to seek clarification from the central agency was made on a motion tabled by CPI-MLA James Mathew. He alleged that the Enforcement Directorate probe disrupted the Life Mission project to provide free housing to the poor.

IUML MLA Kamaruddin arrested

IUML MLA MC Qamaruddin was arrested on Saturday in a fraud case involving crores of rupees in the gold jewelery business. It is considered a setback for the Congress-led opposition UDF ahead of local body elections in Kerala next month.

Police said the MLA from Manjeshwaram was called by the Special Investigation Team for questioning on Saturday morning and was arrested in the evening. He has just been arrested in three cases.

The SIT is investigating 77 cases against him, although police say 115 cases have been registered against the MLA in Kasargod and Kannur on investor complaints.

Most of the complainants are activists of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). The IUML is a major constituent of the United Democratic Front (UDF).

Customs department summoned to Kerala minister Katie Jalil

The Customs Department has summoned Karnataka Higher Education Minister Katie Jalil in connection with the investigation into the case of allegedly accepting consignments of the Holy Quran imported in violation of the rules.

The Quran was imported by the UAE consulate officials in Thiruvananthapuram through a diplomatic channel for personal use. According to official sources, the customs department has issued a notice to Jalil to appear in his office here on Monday.

They will also be asked for clarification on other points of investigation besides the Quran import case. Although nothing has been told about it.

Prior to this, the NIA has also been questioned in connection with the investigation of the terrorism angle in the gold smuggling case.

The Enforcement Directorate has also been questioned in connection with violation of Foreign Fund Regulation Law (FERA) in the Quran import case.
