Jammu & Kashmir Rajya Sabha Elections: Rajya Sabha elections for Jammu & Kashmir’s four seats may soon be announced. The NC-Congress alliance faces tension while BJP strategizes. Full details here! NC-Congress face-to-face before Rajya Sabha elections, elections to be held for four seats; BJP also started mobilization. A stir has started among the political parties of the state for the four vacant seats of Jammu and Kashmir in the Rajya Sabha. Although the Election Commission has not announced elections for these seats, the alliance partners National Conference and Congress are already seen face to face for the seats. NC wants its three seats in the Rajya Sabha to be confirmed.
At the same time, according to sources, Congress with six MLAs wants it should also get one seat in the Rajya Sabha. Congress has also talked to NC regarding this. Congress wants to send former minister Saifuddin Prof. Soz to the Rajya Sabha, but the National Conference is not agreeing to the name of Prof. Soz or his son.
At the same time, BJP leaders have also started mobilization to ensure their two seats in the Rajya Sabha. In BJP, former Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Nirmal Singh, Kavinder Gupta, besides former state president Ravindra Raina are in the race to become Rajya Sabha members.
National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s entry into Rajya Sabha is almost certain. Ajay Sadotra, Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo, Khalid Najeeb Soharwardy, Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan, and Aga Mahmood of the National Conference are staking their claim on the other two seats.
Except Aga Mahmood, the other four NC leaders have also been ministers in the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state and all of them have lost in the year 2014 as well as in the subsequent assembly elections of the year 2024. Aga Mahmood is considered one of the prominent Shia leaders of Kashmir and has played a significant role in ensuring the contribution of the Shia community in the victory of National Conference candidates in various areas of the valley.
Based on the party position of various parties in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, the National Conference, CPI(M) and Congress alliance have 49 members and they also have the support of five independents. At the same time, the BJP has 28 members. The National Conference and Congress alliance is fully capable of winning elections on three seats while BJP can occupy one seat. There are 90 total assembly seats.
In February 2015, Jammu and Kashmir’s most recent Rajya Sabha elections were conducted. At that time, three candidates of the PDP-BJP alliance, Fayaz Mir, Nazir Ahmed Laway, and Shamsher Singh Manhas won. Ghulam Nabi Azad was elected to the Rajya Sabha on behalf of the National Conference-Congress alliance.
The tenure of all these has ended in February 2021 and since then elections for four Rajya Sabha seats of Jammu and Kashmir are pending. Although at present BJP leader Ghulam Ali Khatana is representing Jammu and Kashmir in the Rajya Sabha, he is not an elected but a nominated member.
There was no elected administration in the Union Territory until October 16, 2024, following the dissolution of the then-PDP-BJP coalition government in June 2018. In September and October of this year, Jammu and Kashmir held assembly elections. Only MLAs vote in the election of Rajya Sabha members. Now after the full restoration of the Legislative Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir, Rajya Sabha elections are also likely to be announced soon.
Sources said that the Election Commission may issue a notification to conduct Rajya Sabha elections next month or in January. Given this, Congress state president Tariq Hameed Karra is eyeing a seat for his party.
