Italian President Sergio Mattarella has dissolved the two houses of parliament, choosing a constitutional process to hold early elections in the country.

The president made the announcement in an address to the nation on Thursday after accepting Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s resignation, a leading news agency reported.

Sputnik confirmed his desire to resign during a meeting with President Sergio Mattarella, citing the presidential office.

His decision to step down came after a vote of confidence in the Senate on Wednesday, which the government passed.

But with a small majority as the Five Star Movement, the right-wing League, and center-right Forza Italia parties boycotted the vote.

The three were key allies in a broad coalition that has supported Draghi’s national unity cabinet since its inception on February 13 last year.

Mattarella said, dissolving Parliament was the last option.

“I signed the decree for the dissolution of the chambers to convene new elections within the time limit of 70 days set by the Constitution,” Mattarella said.

He explained that prematurely dissolving parliament is “always a last resort” especially when lawmakers are expected to fulfill important obligations, reports news agency.

According to media reports, the outgoing cabinet will remain in office for current affairs until a new cabinet is formed after the elections.

Italy is facing a deteriorating economic situation.

However, the president warned that many of the country’s priorities during the short campaign required political forces to act with a sense of responsibility and in a constructive manner.

He said, “It is my duty to underline that the period we are facing does not allow a pause in the inevitable actions to offset the effects of the socio-economic crisis, which creates dire consequences for firms and families.
