Iran Arrests British Deputy Ambassador For Espionage

Iran arrests British Deputy Ambassador: Iran arrests UK’s deputy ambassador for espionage.

Giles Whitaker, the deputy head of the United Kingdom’s mission in Iran, and several other academics were arrested on Wednesday on charges of espionage.

According to The Jerusalem Post, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) detained these diplomats on claims of spying and taking soil samples from the restricted area during missile exercises.

At the same time, the UK Foreign Ministry has denied the allegation of espionage leveled by Iran against the deputy head of the United Kingdom’s mission in Iran.

“The reports of the arrest of a British diplomat in Iran are completely false,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Let us tell you that according to the report, the IRGC released video footage claiming that Whitaker was shown near the place where the Iranian army was conducting missile exercises.

According to the report, the deputy ambassador has apologized and has been expelled.

The suspect took soil samples in some areas: IRGC

According to The Jerusalem Post, one of the suspects detained by the IRGC had entered the country as part of scientific exchange with the university.

The IRGC also claimed that the suspect had taken soil samples in some areas. The IRGC further explained that diplomats are often used to search military sites and identify equipment and munitions.

The report also said that the diplomats were being used to “make a new case concerning the military aspects of Iran’s file at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IIA).

Let us tell you that this high-level arrest has come as efforts to return to the JCPOA nuclear deal (JCPO) between Iran and world powers are currently stalled.

America had pulled Iran out of the JCPOA nuclear deal

Iran signed the JCPOA with world powers in July 2015 and agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions on the country.

However, former US President Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the deal in May 2018 and unilaterally imposed sanctions on Iran, forcing Iran to abandon some of its commitments under the agreement.

The US not ready to lift sanctions before returning to deal: Iran

The Iranian nuclear talks began in April 2021 in Vienna but were postponed in March this year due to political differences between Tehran and Washington.

The US has complained that Iran has raised new demands unrelated to the JCPOA deal, while Iranian officials have complained that the US is unwilling to lift sanctions before returning to the deal.

Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), said on Wednesday that “repressive” US sanctions against Iran should be lifted in such a way that all countries can ease into Iran while maintaining their long-term interests. to invest from.
