India’s effort to bring back students from Ukraine is commendable: Supreme Court.

During the hearing in the Supreme Court on the issue of evacuation of students trapped in Ukraine, on Friday.

The central government said that 17 thousand students have been evacuated by Thursday and the process of evacuating the remaining students is going on.

Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, said that as much as the court is concerned about the students, the government is equally concerned.

The court appreciated the efforts being made by the government and expressed satisfaction, but said that the problem of relatives is worrying.

SC has also asked the Center to consider setting up an online helpline in which the details of all the students who have been evacuated from Ukraine and trapped.

This was stated by a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana on Friday while hearing petitions seeking evacuation of students stranded in Ukraine.

The bench asked the Attorney General to tell HCs not to hear the issue of students being stranded in Ukraine as there will be different hearings and orders in the same case if several HCs start hearing the issue.

Terming the war between Russia and Ukraine as unfortunate, the Chief Justice said that the conflict should be resolved through a compromise.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court asked the Attorney General to do something to rescue the students trapped in Ukraine.

On Friday, the Attorney General informed about the efforts being made in this matter.

Venugopal said that the petitioner student Fatima Ahana and her fellow students, trapped near the Romanian border, will reach India by Friday night.

He said that after the hearing on Thursday, the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister PK Mishra was informed in this regard and he informed Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Union Minister dealing with Romania.

On this, Justice Ramana said that thank you very much for what you have done in this matter with your personal interest.

When the court asked how many students were trapped in Ukraine, Venugopal said that 7,000 students are yet to be evacuated and 17,000 have been evacuated.

He said that this matter should be left to the government, it is constantly trying to bring back the students.
