India highlights the importance of regional organizations on collective security at UNSC and urges the UN to focus on Africa.

India highlighted the importance of regional organizations on collective security at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Speaking at the Araria-Formula meeting on Collective Security, Indian Councilor Rajesh Parihar said, “Regional and sub-regional organizations with in-depth knowledge of local factors, and complexities, have demonstrated a significant role in the maintenance of international peace and security.

He said That India supports engagement between the United Nations and regional, and sub-regional organizations in line with the United Nations Charter.

Speaking about the nature of threats faced by member-states since the formation of the United Nations 75 years ago, he said, “Contemporary security challenges are not limited to territorial or political disputes, but go beyond physical and political boundaries.

In today’s globalized world terrorism, radicalization, drug trafficking, and organized crime are on the rise.” Parihar underlined that the security implications of new technologies cannot be disregarded.

Parihar said the “African Union” (AU) has been supported through preventive diplomacy and mediation efforts by ECOWAS, ACAS, the Southern African Development Community, the SDSC, and the inter-governmental authority IGAD.

He called for further awareness of this reality and the spirit of burden sharing among regional organizations should continue to drive the agenda of peace and security.

He urged the international community to pay close attention to the African voice and knowledge.

Area-Formula Meeting.

“Area-formula meetings” are very informal, confidential gatherings that enable UNSC members to have a frank and private exchange of views within a flexible procedural framework.

They provide an opportunity for interested Council members to engage in direct dialogue with higher representatives of governments and international organizations.

The process is named after the Venezuelan ambassador Diego Aria, who began the exercise in 1992 as Venezuela’s representative on the Council (1992–1993).
