GST Filing Update 2025
GST Filing Update 2025: The GST Council has announced a major update — GSTR-9 Table 8A will now be auto-populated using supplier data from FY 2024-25. Here’s how it impacts ITC claims.
In a significant reform aimed at simplifying India’s tax compliance system, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council has approved a major update that will automatically populate Table 8A of the GSTR-9 form starting from the financial year 2024-25. The move is expected to ease the burden of manual reconciliation for taxpayers and improve transparency in Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims.
According to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), the new mechanism will extract data directly from GSTR-2B, which contains invoice information filed by suppliers. This means that buyers will no longer have to manually input invoice details into Table 8A of their annual return.
The initiative, known as the Invoice Management and Matching System, is part of a broader digital push by the government aimed at enhancing accuracy, reducing fraud, and lowering compliance costs for businesses.
Until now, Table 8A of the GSTR-9 form required taxpayers to reconcile data between their books and supplier filings manually. This often led to discrepancies, delayed filings, and errors that affected ITC claims.
From FY 2024-25 onwards:
Table 8A will automatically fetch details from suppliers’ GSTR-1 filings.
Data will be cross-verified with GSTR-2B (auto-drafted ITC statement).
Any mismatches will be highlighted by the portal, allowing taxpayers to correct them before submission.
This update will streamline compliance for lakhs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that often struggle with complex filing requirements.
Ease of Doing Business: By removing manual reconciliation, the government aims to reduce the time and effort needed for annual GST return filing.
Transparency and Accuracy: Since data will be drawn directly from verified sources, ITC mismatches — a common cause of notices and audits — will decline.
Reduced Risk of Fraud: The auto-population system minimizes the chance of fake invoices being used to claim illegitimate ITC.
Better Data Integration: The system will ensure that suppliers’ and recipients’ records are perfectly aligned, improving overall tax ecosystem efficiency.
Tax consultants and industry experts have largely welcomed the reform.
CA Rohit Singh, a GST specialist, commented:
“The Table 8A automation will save hours of manual work for accountants and prevent inadvertent ITC mismatches. However, businesses must still monitor supplier compliance to ensure their invoices are uploaded correctly.”
Some experts have also pointed out that small traders may need awareness sessions to adapt to the new interface. The CBIC is expected to release detailed FAQs and user manuals by December 2025.
Ensure Supplier Compliance: ITC claims depend entirely on supplier data. Encourage your vendors to file GSTR-1 accurately and on time.
Update Accounting Software: Businesses using offline tools must switch to updated GST-compatible platforms for seamless auto-import of data.
Monitor GSTR-2B Regularly: Since Table 8A will rely on GSTR-2B, reviewing this statement monthly helps catch errors early.
Stay Informed: Keep track of official CBIC notifications and training sessions about the rollout.
The GST Network (GSTN) has been gradually enhancing its infrastructure with AI-based reconciliation tools and real-time data sharing between departments. This Table 8A automation aligns with India’s broader goal of making tax filing “faceless, paperless, and frictionless.”
Officials have also hinted at future updates — including AI-driven error prediction, automated refund tracking, and integrated analytics to detect compliance risks before audits occur.

The auto-population of Table 8A marks another important step in India’s digital tax evolution. By reducing manual workload and increasing accuracy, the government hopes to build greater taxpayer confidence and improve compliance rates across sectors.
For millions of Indian businesses, this update means less time spent on reconciliation and more focus on what matters most — growth and productivity.
