FIFA World Cup 2022: Germany out despite victory over Costa Rica.

Four-time champions Germany crashed out of the FIFA World Cup group stage for the second time in a row despite a 4-2 win over Costa Rica here on Thursday night.

Even this victory was not enough to take Germany to the round of 16. Both these teams advanced to the next round after Japan’s 2-1 win over Spain in the group.

Japan topped Group E. Germany coach Hansi Flick said, “I was in the ‘chasing room’ because you can imagine the frustration is so great.”

FIFA World Cup 2022: Germany out despite victory over Costa Rica. In the last World Cup, even as the defending champions, the German team was out of the group stage.

Germany was defeated by Japan in their opening match in Qatar and needed a win at the Al Bayt Stadium and a result in their second match to progress to the next round, but this did not happen.

If the Spanish team had defeated Japan, the German team would have finished second in the group.

Serge Gnabry put Germany ahead by scoring a header in the 10th minute. Interestingly, in the second match of the group too, Spain took the lead against Japan at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.

But the result of both the group matches changed in the second half. Yeltsin Tejeda scored a goal in the 58th minute to bring Costa Rica on par.

Costa Rica then took a 2–1 lead in the 70th minute with an own goal by Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

But German substitute Kai Havertz helped the score to 2–2 three minutes later, and then in the 85th minute Made it ahead 3-2.

Another German substitute Niklas Fulkrug scored the fourth goal in the 89th minute. Japan team topped Group E with six points. She was two points ahead of both Spain and Germany.

Spain progressed to the round of 16 thanks to a superior goal difference, a 7–0 win over Costa Rica played a key role.

Now Spain will face Morocco in the round of 16 while Japan will face Croatia. Germany needed five more goals to equal Spain.

This match was also important because Stéphanie Fraupart of France became the first female referee to referee in the Men’s World Cup.
