FAA to Cut Air Traffic by 10% in 40 Major US Markets Amid Government Shutdown

FAA to Cut Air Traffic by 10% in 40 Major US Markets: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will reduce air traffic operations by 10% across 40 major US markets amid a government shutdown. The move, driven by staffing shortages and budget constraints, could disrupt flights and delay millions of travelers.

FAA announced plans to cut air-traffic operations

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced plans to cut air-traffic operations by 10% across 40 of the nation’s busiest airports, citing severe staffing shortages caused by the ongoing government shutdown. The decision is expected to ripple through the aviation network, potentially causing delays, cancellations, and longer security wait times during an already busy travel season.

According to FAA officials, the temporary cuts will primarily affect high-volume markets including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Dallas. These adjustments are part of a broader effort to maintain operational safety and reduce pressure on overworked controllers as federal funding remains stalled.

“We are taking necessary measures to ensure safety while minimizing disruption,” said FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker, urging passengers to check their flight statuses frequently.

The decision follows reports of increasing fatigue among air-traffic controllers and maintenance backlogs at several regional control centers. Aviation unions have been warning for weeks that prolonged funding gaps could jeopardize safety and push the system toward collapse.

Air Line Pilots Association

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) criticized the government for allowing the crisis to reach this level. NATCA President Rich Santa called it “a dangerous gamble with America’s aviation system.”

Travel analysts predict that the cuts could lead to up to 5,000 flight delays daily, especially during peak hours. Major airlines, including Delta, United, and American Airlines, have started adjusting their flight schedules and issuing travel waivers to affected passengers.

While the FAA insists that the reduction is temporary, there is no clear timeline for resuming normal operations until Congress reaches a funding agreement.

For now, passengers are advised to arrive early, monitor updates, and brace for potential disruptions as one of the world’s busiest aviation systems navigates this unprecedented challenge.
