Election Commission Has Re-emphasized Changes In Electoral Law

Election Commission has re-emphasized changes in the electoral law. Election Commission again sought the right to cancel the registration of political parties.

The Election Commission has re-emphasized changes in the electoral law to give the right to deregister political parties that are inactive and not contesting elections.

ECI had discussed various electoral reforms with Law Minister Kiren Rijiju last week. Many proposals related to this are pending with the government.

The Election Commission has the right to register any political party, but it does not have the right to cancel the registration of any party.

The demand for obtaining the right to deregister a party has been pending with the Law Ministry for years.

The commission had earlier identified political parties that have not contested elections since 2005. He had also removed more than 200 such parties from the list.

The commission suspects that most of these parties are on paper to help convert their black money into white by accepting donations from people.

There are about 3,000 registered political parties with the Election Commission. Of these, eight are recognized as national parties, while 53 are recognized as state-level parties.
