ED Opposes Anil Deshmukh’s Plea For Treatment In Pvt. Hospital

ED opposes Anil Deshmukh’s plea for treatment in a private hospital in Maharashtra.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday opposed the plea of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh seeking permission to undergo treatment at a private hospital.

The ED said that Anil Deshmukh can get similar treatment at the Government JJ Hospital in Mumbai. The ED submitted its affidavit before a special court here in the money laundering case.

The ED said doctors at JJ Hospital, where Anil Deshmukh was treated, suggested surgery on his shoulder, but it was not required to be done in case of an emergency.

The ED claimed that the doctors at JJ Hospital are qualified to perform the surgery and hence Anil Deshmukh does not need to be admitted to a private hospital.

However, Anil Deshmukh’s lawyer Aniket Nikam argued that it is the right of the minister to get treatment from the hospital and doctor of his choice.

The special court will pronounce the verdict on the petition on Tuesday. Anil Deshmukh, 72, is currently in judicial custody since his arrest by the ED in a money laundering case last November.

The ED affidavit said the agency had questioned the doctors of JJ Hospital, where Anil Deshmukh was admitted for shoulder pain.

ED opposes Anil Deshmukh’s plea: ED said this in the affidavit.

According to the ED, Anil Deshmukh’s case was not emergency surgery.

ED said that Dr. Ankit Marfatia, a specialist arthroscopy surgeon has performed 30-35 shoulder-related surgeries similar to the applicant and has also done his expertise in arthroscopy surgery.

The ED said that Anil Deshmukh does not need to be admitted to a private hospital and he can get treatment at JJ Hospital only.

Nikam argued that the shoulder pain of the senior NCP leader was not subsiding and he has been advised surgery by JJ Hospital.

Anil Deshmukh wants to get this surgery done in a hospital and doctors of his choice. He is a senior citizen, and hence his heart condition will also have to be monitored during the surgery.

He said that if Anil Deshmukh is ready to bear the cost of the surgery, then the Prosecuting Agency (ED) cannot insist on getting him treated in a government hospital.

The ED launched a money-laundering probe against Anil Deshmukh, who was earlier the Home Minister in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

He was later booked by the CBI in a corruption case related to extortion charges made by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir.

The ED claimed that Anil Deshmukh misused his official position and collected Rs 4.70 crore from various bars in Mumbai.

The money was given to Nagpur-based Shri Sai Shikshan Sansthan, an educational trust controlled by the Anil Deshmukh family.
