Former Pakistan PM Gilani calls for support from MQM leaders in Senate chairman election

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani (Yousuf Raza Gilani) met leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and called for his support in the upcoming Senate Presidential election.

According to a report by Geo News, although the Pakistan Democratic Movement has yet to announce a candidate for Senate President and Vice President, Gilani will likely stand for the presidency on behalf of the opposition, which will be through secret ballot on March 12.

The election of the Deputy Chairman of Pakistan will also be held on 12 March and the MQM has expressed a desire to assume the post of one of the members of its party.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) convenor Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said it was a privilege to meet the former Prime Minister.

Gilani said during his prime ministership on Saturday that MQM was very supportive. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has done a lot of work with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in the past.

During the Senate elections, he had defeated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hafeez Shaikh by 169 to 164 votes in Islamabad, according to unofficial results.

The result came as a blow to Khan’s PTI to control his party and its allies National Assembly, and the implication is that some members or allies may have voted by secret ballot.
