Adams said that over the past few years there had been a growing demand from hundreds of thousands of Indians living in the city to declare Diwali a school holiday.
Once the law is passed, Diwali will be a school holiday in New York City from next year.
Rajkumar, a member of the New York Assembly, highlighted that the city’s school calendar does not have enough space for the Diwali school holiday.
This week, Rajkumar introduced legislation in New York that allows Diwali to be included in the school calendar.
According to the education laws of New York, the school must be in operation for at least 180 days.
However, no further holidays can be placed in the school calendar to meet this minimum requirement of 180 days.
