Former NewsClick employee’s Kerala residence raided by Delhi Police, devices seized.

On October 6th, Delhi Police conducted a raid at the residence of Anusha Paul, a former employee of NewsClick, situated in Kodumon, Kerala.

During the operation, the Delhi Police confiscated both Paul’s laptop and mobile phone as part of an ongoing investigation.

A three-member team from the Delhi Police took Paul’s statement during the raid, wherein he was questioned about his previous affiliation with NewsClick and the CPI(M).

It’s worth noting that Paul had been in Kerala, attending to a close family member’s medical treatment at the time of the raid.

Paul disclosed that the Delhi Police’s inquiries extended to his reporting on subjects such as farmers’ protests, NRC-CAA demonstrations, and the central government’s management of the Covid-19 crisis.

Expressing his perspective on the situation, Paul stated, ‘This appears to be a concerted effort to intimidate both the organization and its employees who have been vocal critics of the Narendra Modi government and the RSS.

During the interrogation, Delhi Police also inquired if he was acquainted with CPI(M) Delhi State Secretary KM Tiwari, to which Paul replied, ‘Indeed, I do know him.

I hold a position as a state committee member of the Delhi unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and its state treasurer.’

Notably, Paul confirmed that Kerala Police was not involved in the raid.

Background Information:

This development comes in the wake of the Special Cell of Delhi Police arresting Prabir Purkayastha, the founder and editor-in-chief of NewsClick, as well as Amit Chakraborty, the head of the Human Resources Department, on the evening of October 3rd.

A total of 46 journalists and contributors associated with the online news portal were interrogated, and their mobile devices and other electronic equipment were seized.

NewsClick faces allegations of conspiring to jeopardize India’s security and integrity, along with accusations of illicit funding from China.

Delhi Police has registered an FIR against NewsClick under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
