Anil Jaisingh Ghanvat, one of the members of the three-member committee set up by the Supreme Court on agricultural laws.

He has written a letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, stating that the committee’s report on laws is yet to be released, or has not been made public, or has not been considered by the Court.

Know what’s the matter

Ghanvat wrote, “The Supreme Court suspended the implementation of the three agricultural laws and on January 12, 2021, constituted a committee to report on these laws.

The committee was given two months to submit its report. The committee, after consulting a large number of farmers and several stakeholders, submitted its report on March 19, 2021, ahead of schedule.

The committee incorporated the opinions and suggestions of all the stakeholders with an aim to bring maximum benefits to the farmers.

All the apprehensions of the farmers have been resolved in the report. The committee was confident that the recommendations would pave the way for a solution to the ongoing farmers’ agitation.

Ghanwat said that he is sad that the issue raised by the farmers is not yet resolved and the agitation is still on.

He said that as a member of the committee, especially representing the farming community, I am sad that the issue raised by the farmers has not been resolved yet and the agitation is on.

I think the Supreme Court has not paid any attention to the report.

He further requested the Supreme Court to issue the report at the earliest to implement its recommendations for peaceful resolution of the impasse to the satisfaction of the farmers.

“I humbly request the Supreme Court to kindly issue a report at the earliest to implement its recommendations for peaceful resolution of the impasse to the satisfaction of the farmers,” he said.

The committee, in its report, had earlier said that the matter has been consulted after meeting around 85 farmer organizations to find a solution to the issue.

The farmers are continuing their protest against three newly enacted agricultural laws – the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020.

There are agreements on Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 (Farmers Empowerment and Protection) at various borders in the national capital.
