Iraq Protest: Supporters of al-Sadr end protests in Iraq; Shadow in Baghdad, 30 killed in the violence.

Agitators have returned after Iraq’s influential Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called on his followers on Tuesday to call off protests and leave the city’s green zone.

Silence descended on the streets of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Earlier in the day, Sadr called on his followers to vacate the parliament building and leave the green zone, where government facilities and foreign embassies are located.

Following the call of the cleric, thousands of supporters of al-Sadr began to leave the center of Baghdad.

Meanwhile, security forces have opened all-important bridges over the Tigris River in the Iraqi capital and started removing concrete barriers.

Things got worse in Iraq on Monday when Sadr announced his retirement from politics.

Iraq has faced a political deadlock for the first time since 2003. 30 people were killed and hundreds were injured in clashes between Sadr supporters and security forces.

On Monday, thousands of Sadr’s supporters occupied the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He was seen taking a bath in the swimming pool there, walking in the meeting hall and other places.

It should also be mentioned here that there has been a long-standing conflict in Iraq between the supporters of Sadr and their political opponent, the Iran-backed Shia group.

Meanwhile, expressing concern over the ongoing protests in Iraq, the European Union urged all parties to exercise restraint to prevent further violence.
