BCCI Officials To Remain In Positions For A Few More Days

BCCI officials to remain in positions for a few more days, relief to these 3 veterans including Sourav Ganguly.

When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) holds its annual general meeting (AGM) on December 24, the Supreme Court will be on winter holidays.

The Supreme Court holidays will be from 18 December to 1 January. This means that all matters related to cricket reform will arrive in the next year.

It also means that Sourav Ganguly, Jai Shah, and Jayesh George will continue in their positions till 2021, even when their tenure has ended a few months ago.

According to the new constitution of the BCCI, its officials have to go to the cooling-off period after spending six consecutive years in BCCI or in a union of the state.

After spending the cooling-off period, the man can return for another three years. This is one of the seven rules on which a change has been sought.

Sourav Ganguly was elected BCCI President on 23 October last year. He had 278 days left, as he had also lived in the Bengal Cricket Association (CAB).

He was in CAB since July 2014. Hence his term in BCCI came to an end on 26 July 2020.

According to the 2013 report, Jai Shah, the current secretary of BCCI, was elected joint secretary of Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) on September 8, 2013.

Even before that he was an executive of GCA. Therefore, his term is also over.

George, the current Joint Secretary of BCCI, has been the Secretary, Joint Secretary, Treasurer of Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) for five years and has completed one year as Joint Secretary in BCCI.

In September last year, he told a newspaper at the time of KCA elections that, I have been in KCA from 21 June 2013 to 7 July 2018. I have 11 months left to complete six years.

He also took a break during KCA’s tenure. He took a break from 7 July 2018 to 14 September 2019 and then returned as KCA President on 23 October 2019.

This means that he has completed his six years, removing the brakes. Therefore, from 14 September, he too should have gone to the cooling-off period.

All the three officers, however, are on the board as they await the Supreme Court verdict. All of them have appealed to the Supreme Court to make seven changes in the BCCI Constitution.
