Bangladeshi captain retired from T20 as soon as he did a clean sweep against WI, the country’s only century in the format.
Bangladesh ODI cricket team captain Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from T20.
He gave this information immediately after winning the third and last match of the 3 ODI series against the West Indies in Guyana, Bangladesh. Under Tamim’s captaincy,
Bangladesh made a clean sweep of the West Indies 3-0 in the series. Bangladesh won the last match in Guyana by 4 wickets. Tamim was adjudged Player of the Series.
Immediately after winning the series, at 6 pm local time, Tamim wrote in Bengali on his Facebook page, “I am considered to be retired from T20 cricket from today itself. Thanks to everyone.”
With this, the speculation about Tamim’s decision to play T20 cricket came to an end. He took a break from T20 cricket earlier this year. Then he said that he is getting away from this format for 6 months.
Bangladeshi captain retired from T20: Tamim took a 6-month break from T20.
Tamim had said on January 27 this year, “My full focus will be on Tests and ODIs. We are preparing to qualify for the World Test Championship and 2023 World Cup.
I will not think about T20 in the next six months. I hope the players will do so well that the team will not need me in T20s.
But if God forbid the team or the cricket board needs me and I am ready then I will think about it.
Tamim did not play T20 World Cup last year.
Tamim had left the claim of the T20 World Cup team of his own volition, surprising everyone last year. Then Tamim took this step to give more chances to Soumya Sarkar and Mohammad Naeem as openers.
However, both these players failed as openers and after that, both were dropped from the T20 team. Tamim last played a T20I in March 2020. Then he scored 41 runs in 33 balls against Zimbabwe.
Bangladesh’s only century in Tamim T20.
Tamim’s performance in the rest of the format was good. Under his captaincy, Bangladesh won five consecutive ODI series. This includes the series that ended on Saturday against the West Indies.
Tamim was a regular member of Bangladesh’s T20 team from 2007 to 2018. During this, he participated in 75 out of 84 matches of the team. He is the only Bangladesh batsman to score a century in T20.
At the same time, he has scored 1701 runs in this format at an average of over 24. He will continue to play domestic T20. He is also the highest run scorer in BPL
