Assam Rifles jawans removed from checkpost after protests by women, CRPF and local police will take charge.

At the Moirang Lamkhai post in Manipur’s Bishnupur, Assam Rifles soldiers have been removed and replaced with CRPF and state police. A notification has been sent out with this information.

The decision to withdraw the Assam Rifles came after several women’s groups in the Valley districts began protesting on Monday demanding the withdrawal of the paramilitary force from the ethnic strife-torn northeastern state.

Notification Released Information.

“The checkpoint at Moirang Lamkhai on Bishnupur to Kangwai road to be replaced by 9 AR with local police and 128 Bn CRPF with immediate effect and until further orders,” said the notification issued by Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order) L Kailun on Monday.

Women Protested.

Assam Rifles has been contacted and response from the paramilitary force is awaited.

Women’s groups on Monday blocked a road in Imphal West district’s Hodam Leerak and Kwakithel and Imphal East’s Angom Likai and Khurai areas.

Relaxation in curfew.

Meanwhile, the administration of Imphal East and West districts on Tuesday extended the relaxation in curfew by two hours.

Officials said curfew has been relaxed in Imphal East and Imphal West from 5 am to 2 pm. There will be relaxation from 5 am to 4 pm for Thoubal district and from 5 am to 5 pm for Kakching.

So far, more than 160 people have passed away.

On May 3, after a “Tribal Solidarity March” was planned in the hill regions to protest against the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) classification, ethnic confrontations broke out in Manipur, resulting in over 160 fatalities and hundreds of injuries.

The majority of the Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur’s population, reside in the Imphal Valley.

A bit more than 40% of the population are members of the tribal Naga and Kuki communities, who reside in the steep areas.
